Going through the path to Cherrygrove City is a pretty basic way to start exploring this world.

If you're planning on taking on gyms though, you should probably take on Falkner to save the trouble for your Pidgey. That means going through the route.

Admittedly I am mostly just going with what I know... I haven't actually taken the ferry before. I'm not sure I'd want to risk it right now, though.

If you decide to go to Cherrygrove, you should be able to stay at their Pokémon Center for free, at least for a few days. There isn't much to do or see in Cherrygrove, so most people don't stick around there for that long.

As for Venus, she's a Serperior. The evolved form of Snivy and a pretty solid grass type.

Which way to go really depends on whether you'd rather explore the Johto or the Kanto area first. Though if you're looking for more people to travel or meet up with, it seems that Johto is where most are to be found.
